The Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol is a region in the south of Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, comprising the coastal towns and communities along the coastline of the Province of Málaga. With its 160km of coastline, the Costa del Sol is situated between two lesser known coastal regions, the Costa de la Luz and the Costa Tropical. Formerly made up of only a series of small fishing settlements, today the region is a world-renowned tourist destination.

Washed by the Mediterranean Sea, the Costa del Sol (literally 'Coast of the Sun') has around 325 days of sunshine a year and an average annual temperature of 23°C. Having one of the best microclimates on the planet means that you can spend beautiful long summer evenings socialising or relaxing outside, lazy days on one of the numerous sandy beaches and golfing on some of the best golf courses in the world. The Costa del Sol offers an incredibly varied lifestyle, with beautiful marinas, chic designer shops, traditional Spanish Tapas bars, glamorous Michelin Star restaurants, beachside Chiringuitos, numerous National Parks, traditional whitewashed villages, gardens, museums and historical monuments. Whatever you enjoy doing, you will find it here! Living well in Spain is still very affordable, with food and drink prices below the E.U. average.

Before you buy, it is a good idea to have an open mind and see a number of properties in different locations before making a decision. That way, you can get a real feel for what’s available. Many clients focus on an area they have visited before, but once we have shown them lots of new and exciting locations, end up buying in a completely different area. So, it's important to choose a Real Estate Agency with the expertise and experience to guide you to the most suitable areas for the lifestyle and budget you require.

Costa del Sol Weather

The Costa del Sol has the most reliable weather in mainland Spain due to its southerly position, making it a very popular place to live and also an ideal year-round holiday destination. Even in the winter months, afternoon temperatures can be in the late teens, so strolling around a tourist hotspot like Marbella Old Town is a pleasure even in December or January. The wind blows frequently: not by accident, the Costa del Sol used to be called Costa del Viento ("windy coast"). In the cooler half of the year, the wind blows along with Atlantic disturbances, while in summer it blows as a cooling sea breeze in the afternoon.

Costa del Sol weather averages and climate information

Enjoying a Mediterranean climate with four distinct seasons, the region lives up to its name and receives around 325 days of sunshine in the year. July and August are the hottest months, with the average daily max temperatures around 31°C. January is the coldest time of the year, with the average daily temperatures at around 16°C.

Spring

From March to May, the climate is mild and sunny, with rainy days still possible, but not very frequent. Daytime highs range between 20 - 24°C and the average rainfall is between 20 - 50mm. The average daily sunshine in spring is around 8 hours. By May, and sometimes already by April, the first hot days can occur, with highs around 30°C.

Summer

The Costa Del Sol summer lasts from June through to late September and experiences average daily highs of around 28 to 31°C, but temperatures have been known to soar up to the highs of 40°C+ during a heatwave. Thanks to the cool sea breeze, which is a constant feature of the Costa del Sol, the heat is never too intense. The chances of rainfall are non-existent in July and low in June, August and September. The average daily amount of sunshine is at its peak with 11 hours of sunlight in July and 10 hours in June and August.

Autumn

The Costa del Sol enjoys comfortable and warm temperatures in autumn. Daytime highs range between 20 - 24°C. The average rainfall is between 60 - 100mm and the average daily sunshine is around 6 hours. In October, there are still many warm and sunny days, especially in the first half. By November the weather is mild, but it's also often cloudy and rainy. Sometimes, the rains are concentrated in a short time period and can be heavy.

Winter

Winter is the coldest season in the Costa del Sol, but despite this, it’s still a lot warmer than any other parts of Northern Europe. The temperatures between December and February are about 14°C. Winter is the wet season with December usually being the wettest month of the year with an average rainfall at 100mm. The Costa del Sol receives between 5 and 7 hours of daily sunshine in the winter months. Very cold days are rare: Only on the very coldest of nights, the temperature can go down to freezing point, but even in these cases, it usually rises above 10°C during the day. Snow is a rare occurrence in Coastal regions.

Sea Temperature

The Alboran Sea is never very warm to swim in because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, it is still very cool in June, when the water temperature is about 20°C, then it rises to 22°C in July and September and reaches 23°C in August, when it becomes acceptable for swimming. Here are the average sea temperatures in Marbella.

Costa del Sol Golf Guide

There are over 70 Costa del Sol golf courses between Torre del Mar and Sotogrande, the largest concentration anywhere in Europe. Since golf first arrived in the area nearly a century ago, its popularity has grown to the extent that the Costa del Sol now ranks as a top golf destination worldwide and is Europe’s first choice for golf. This is why it is known as the 'Costa del Golf'. Every year, tens of thousands of keen golfers enjoy a game or participate in one of the many tournaments.

The unrivalled climate which the Costa del Sol offers, with over 320 days of sunshine a year and low rainfall, makes it perfect to enjoy a round of golf anytime without being worried about the weather. On top of that, the courses are surrounded by stunning natural landscapes which are a treat for the senses. You can even benefit from jaw-dropping views overlooking the deep-blue Mediterranean Sea. Picture yourself in this paradise-like setting playing a round of golf with the sun shining bright and the sea breeze blowing gently to soothe the heat on the hottest days. Few places in the world can offer similar conditions.

The world’s top designers have put their name to Costa del Sol golf courses. From Tom Simpson, the Scottish designer who extended the very first course to 18 holes at the Parador de Golf, to Spanish golfing talent Severiano Ballesteros who designed Los Arqueros Golf and Alhaurín Golf, the list of big names runs long.

Málaga province also offers a wonderful infrastructure for playing this sport, making the Costa del Sol a true Golfers Paradise.
